Lunette Mestrual Cup Review and Giveaway!

Posted by Bethany McCarey-Hammond, HBCE on January 25, 2011 at 6:55 PM

About 6 moon cycles ago, I decided to make the switch from disposable tampons and pads to a menstrual cup and cloth pads. After himing and hawing for about a year, I finally read an article about all the chemicals in the disposables. Now, I use cloth diapers on my babies for three reasons; cost, better for Mother Earth and no chemicals. Doesn't it make sense to give myself the same attention? I thought so, and this is what led me to make the switch.

I was so hesitant, mostly because of the *gross* factor. I mean, it has to be gross, right? Like with all things new, I had the fear of the unknown. Then, the last time I needed to buy some "supplies", I decided that it was the last time that I was going to spend $15-$20 on chemicals that are not only hurting me, but are hurting Mother Earth, as well.

I started using a cup (whom will remain nameless) that I think was too big. It took me a couple of months to get it right and had to wear a back-up cloth pad (which is a whole other blog post!). The first couple of times I tried, I just couldn't get it right. One time it made me have cramps, I knew that I must have had in wrong. Other times, I could totally feel it and it was uncomfortable. Then, I got it right. I knew I had it right because I couldn't *really* feel it. I mean, I think it was too big, so I always knew it was there, but it was no longer really noticeable and uncomfortable. And there were no leaks. It was great, but I knew that I had to start looking for a smaller one.

One of my favorite online stores, Domino Pads, sells a cup called Lunette. I like that it came in Clear, Blue, or Green. It comes in Size 1 and Size 2. Size 1 is recommended for light to medium flow or for women who have never had intercourse. Size 2, their bestseller, is recommended for medium to heavy flow. Well, generally, I would fit into Size 2, but in comparing the sizes with the other cup; I decided to give Size 1, in blue, a try. I am glad that I did. I do have a heavy flow, but it contained it perfectly and it was a perfect fit.

Overall, I am so happy with the Lunette. I wore it from start to finish with my last cycle (cleaning it about every 8 hours!), including overnight, without a back-up pad and it never leaked. It is so much cleaner than tampons and disposable pads, and it is so nice waking up clean in the morning. I will keep the other cup, but don't anticipate that I will need to use it again. I will never go back to tampons or disposables pads and regret that it took me this long to use a cup. I started my moon cycle when I was 11, so that ismany years that I was putting chemicals on and in one of the most important body parts, so much money spent on supplies and so much waste put into Mother Earth. I will add, too, that I do not dread it when I know my cycle is coming and I get a lot less cramps right beforehand and during. My cycles are actually *nice*. I just put the cup in and go. It is really that simple once you get the hang of it! And it is so NOT gross!!

I highly recommend the Lunette Cup! You can order it either at Domino Pads or on the Lunette website. Oh and one last thing, Caron at Lunette, was wonderful to work with! Very nice!

My doula had mentioned these before but I completely forgot about them! I actually just began my cycle again now that Hudson is 8 months. For some reason my body is rejecting tampons...so uncomfortable! I'm going to order one of these!

I have been wanting to try one of these, but, I was scared. LOL I would want a blue size 2.

In 2004, Heli Kurjanen, Lunette founder and owner, ordered a menstrual cup from an online shop. She encountered some problems using it, but was thrilled about the idea of the product. Heli was convinced that the product could be better and decided to design her own improved menstrual cup that was easier and safer to use. The Lunette menstrual cup was born!

Great giveaway!! If I won, I would choose the Diana in model 2. I love that the colored cups are named after Goddesses. Their slogans are great, too. Especially, "Your boyfriend/partner will lick this idea a lot". haha

Lunette Cup Entry: One of many reasons I would like to use a Lunette Cup: I would love to not feel so uncomfortable during my period! Color and Size: Blue and #2. Something about the company: Unlike other menstrual cups, the Lunette cup is completely smooth on the inside which makes it much easier to clean
